Pickle Puff Ham Grilled Cheese

Ham and cheese is already a win. But give the bread a crispy top with a little pickle situation, and suddenly it’s something else entirely.

Makes 2 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dill pickle puffs, crushed fairly fine
  • 4 slices sourdough
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

  • 6 ounces shaved Black Forest ham
  • Mayo or softened butter
  • Dijon mustard

Directions

  1. Crush the puffs into small crumbs, leaving some texture so the crust stays crunchy
  2. Spread the mayonnaise or butter on one side of each slice of bread, and press into the crushed puffs gently so they stick
  3. Turn the slices over, add a layer of Dijon, ham, cheese and 2nd slice of bread
  4. Add mayo to the top, and press gently into the puffs
  5. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat (this works best cooked gently) and put the sandwiches puff-side down in the pan
  6. Cook slowly until turning golden and crisp, about 3 to 4 minutes then flip carefully and cook the second side until the cheese is melted and the ham is warmed through
  7. Serve while the crust is still crunchy
