Meatball Gravy French Bread

Meatball Gravy French Bread

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

  • 1 French loaf, halved lengthwise
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 12–16 fully cooked meatballs, halved
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil
  • 1/2 cup finely diced onion
  • 1 cup sliced cremini mushrooms
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups Your New Favorite Gravy, recipe here
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (optional, for thickening)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
  • Black pepper

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Mix butter and garlic, spread on cut sides of the bread, and toast in the oven until lightly crisp, about 10 minutes.
  3. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high. Add meatballs cut-side down and cook until browned and crisp, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook 1 minute more, then remove.
  4. In the same pan, add onion and cook until just softened, about 3 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook until tender. If pan is dry, add a little more oil.
  5. Add gravy and bring to a simmer. If you want it thicker, stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until glossy and slightly thickened. Season with black pepper.
  6. Return meatballs to the pan and let everything warm through.
  7. Spoon a layer of gravy mixture onto the toasted bread, then pile on meatballs and more gravy. Top with mozzarella.
  8. Return to oven until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 5 to 6 minutes.
